The Great Meme Coin Divide: Why Traders Are Ditching DOGE for PEPE

The Great Meme Coin Rotation: Why PEPE Is Leading the July Rally While DOGE Lags Behind
PEPE has climbed roughly 15% over the past seven days, according to data cited from CoinMarketCap, putting it among the best-performing large-cap altcoins this week and reigniting talk of a broader meme coin rotation.
The frog-themed token is trading near $0.0000027, backed by daily trading volume exceeding $150 million, while Dogecoin, the sector's oldest and most recognizable meme coin, continues to trade sideways between $0.072 and $0.076 despite its significantly larger market capitalization and deeper liquidity.
The divergence has become one of the most discussed developments in meme coin markets this month, reflecting changing capital flows rather than simply the performance of either token.
What's Driving PEPE Higher
Part of PEPE's momentum comes from on-chain positioning.
Whale wallets accumulated approximately 2.6 trillion PEPE tokens, valued at nearly $7.5 million, around key support levels during late June, according to blockchain analytics platforms. Large-scale accumulation often attracts momentum traders because whale activity frequently influences short-term price action.
Retail participation also remains relatively strong. PEPE's holder count has surpassed 550,000 wallet addresses, indicating that interest has remained resilient despite the token still trading more than 85% below its all-time high of $0.00002803.
Institutional interest has also emerged.
Canary Capital filed an S-1 registration with the SEC in April for a spot PEPE ETF that would directly hold PEPE while maintaining a small Ether allocation for operational expenses. Although the filing remains under regulatory review and produced only a muted initial market reaction, it represents one of the first serious attempts to package a pure meme coin inside a regulated investment vehicle.
Meanwhile, a new Ethereum-based lending protocol called Purinta launched on mainnet, allowing PEPE holders to borrow USDC using their tokens as collateral. While still relatively small, it expands PEPE's utility beyond simple speculative trading.
From a technical perspective, chart analysts note that PEPE successfully rebounded from demand zones between $0.0000023 and $0.0000024. Some traders also point to the appearance of a weekly bullish engulfing pattern, suggesting that the lengthy correction earlier this year could be approaching exhaustion.
While these signals don't guarantee a sustained rally, they have kept PEPE at the center of meme coin discussions heading into the second half of July.
Why DOGE Is Struggling Despite Deeper Liquidity
Dogecoin's relative weakness is more difficult to attribute to a single factor.
DOGE has declined approximately 55% over the past year and remains nearly 90% below its May 2021 all-time high near $0.73.
Seasonality hasn't helped either.
Historically, July has been a challenging month for Dogecoin. Over the past twelve years, the median July return has been a 4.6% loss, with only five Julys finishing in positive territory.
Institutional investment products have also failed to generate meaningful buying pressure.
Two U.S.-listed Dogecoin ETFs—including the REX-Osprey product launched last September—currently manage between $13.7 million and $20 million in net assets. Relative to Dogecoin's approximately $11 billion market capitalization, those holdings remain relatively small.
Earlier this month, one of the ETFs experienced $871,110 in net outflows during a single trading session—only its third negative flow day since launch. While the dollar amount itself isn't particularly large, it highlights the limited institutional demand currently supporting DOGE.
On-chain metrics paint a similar picture.
Network analysts report that active wallet addresses and transaction counts remain well below levels observed during previous bull market cycles, suggesting retail participation has weakened considerably.
Dogecoin's unlimited supply also creates ongoing selling pressure.
Approximately 5.2 billion new DOGE enter circulation each year, representing an annual inflation rate of roughly 3.4%. That continual issuance requires consistent buying demand simply to maintain current price levels.
From a technical standpoint, DOGE remains below both its 50-day and 200-day exponential moving averages, leaving the broader trend bearish across higher timeframes despite recent stabilization near the $0.070 support zone.
Why This Matters
The growing divergence between PEPE and DOGE illustrates how capital is rotating within today's meme coin market.
Market capitalization and liquidity alone are no longer the primary drivers of performance. Instead, traders appear to be rewarding assets supported by:
- Whale accumulation
- Strong narrative momentum
- Fresh institutional catalysts
- Expanding ecosystem utility
That means newer meme coins with favorable positioning can outperform larger, more established competitors whose narratives have stalled.
The broader crypto market can also view this rotation as an indicator of speculative risk appetite.
Historically, meme coins are among the earliest sectors to respond when speculative capital returns to cryptocurrencies. PEPE's recent strength suggests that risk-on sentiment may already be re-emerging even while Bitcoin and Ethereum continue trading within relatively narrow ranges.
What to Watch Next
Several price levels and catalysts could determine whether the current rotation continues.
For PEPE, traders will watch whether price can establish support above the $0.0000028–$0.0000030 range with increasing trading volume. Many technical analysts view this area as the next major resistance zone.
For Dogecoin, the critical support remains between $0.070 and $0.072.
A breakdown below that range could expose the $0.060 area, while a move back above $0.078 would represent the first meaningful indication that bearish momentum is fading.
Beyond price action, investors will continue monitoring:
- Progress on the Canary Capital PEPE ETF filing
- Additional whale accumulation data
- On-chain activity across both networks
- Overall speculative sentiment within the meme coin sector
These developments will likely shape the next phase of meme coin performance throughout the remainder of July.
